Harraway Tree Services was established in 1989 and provides arboricultural consultancy and training services to a wide range of clients, throughout the UK and in Europe.

Company principal, John Harraway, has over thirty year's experience of all aspects of the industry and, prior to forming his own company, worked as a climbing arborist, local government tree officer and an arboricultural lecturer.

Harraway Tree Services specializes in hazard tree assessment and decay evaluation. Wide experience has been gained in modern decay detection techniques and the company has available a Picus sonic tomography unit, Resistograph decay detecting drill and Arborsonic decay detector.

A wide range of craft and technical training services are also available, through our associate company,
Beechwood Training.

Decay detection in standing trees:
Below are examples of results obtained following investigation of decay using a Picus sonic tomography unit and a Resistograph F300 decay detecting drill.
Inspection of an ancient beech tree
The Picus uses the relative velocity of sound waves induced across the stem to compose a colour-shift image. Dark areas correspond to higher velocities and, hence, denser wood. Decay results in lower sound speeds and a shift to lighter colours (with red and blue/white indicating more significant decay). Examples of a sound tree and one with decay are shown below:

The Resistograph measures the drilling resistance of a very fine drill bit (to a maximum depth of 30cm). Significant drops in drilling resistance are indicative of decay. See example below:

Training Services:

Beechwood Training provides training in a wide range of forestry and arboricultural skills, including chainsaw use, tree climbing and aerial rescue, pruning and dismantling techniques, mobile elevating work platforms, brushwood chippers, tree survey and inspection, etc.

Courses are also run for 'competent person' training in the Thorough Examination of Arboricultural Equipment (Loler). Beechwood Training is registered as a Service Provider for Lantra Awards.
